Movie meme update

Well, looks like I have a few movie quotes left from my earlier movie meme that need to be identified. I was happy to that most of them were recognized. The leftover quotes are:

6. Ladies and gentlemen, I have been to the Great Wall of China, I have seen the Pyramids of Egypt, I've even witnessed a grown man satisfy a camel. But never in all my years as a sportscaster have I witnessed something as improbable, as impossible, as what we've witnessed here today!

That was from the commentator named Cotton at the end of the match in Dodgeball.

12. Now, you listen to me, Mr. Grand High Poobah of Upper Buttcrack, I'm just about half-past give a shit with your fun and games.

That was one of my favorite lines by Kathy Bates in Delores Claiborne.

Fun movie meme

Snagged this from Fatistician's blog. It's a fun movie meme. Some of mine are pretty easy, I think, but they are favorites of mine from those movies. No. 1 makes me cry a little, lol.

1. Pick 15 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search functions.
5. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.

1. Cathy got this one (Shawshank Redemption)
I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man...felt free.

2. Jennifer got this one. (The Usual Suspects)
After that my guess is that you will never hear from him again. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. And like that... he is gone.

3. Annette got this one. (LA Confidential)
Get me some narco skinny. I want to do an all-hophead issue. You know, schwartze jazz musicians and movie stars. You like it?

4. Annette got this one. (LOTR: Return of the King)
Bad idea. Very handy in a tight spot, these lads, despite the fact they're dead.

5. Jennifer got this one (Office Space)
And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were married, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...

7. Jennifer got this one (Wedding Crashers)
I'd like to be cowboys from Arizona or pimps from Oakland but it's not Halloween. Grow up; Peter Pan, Count Chocula.

8. Shinobi got this one. (Transformers)
And you didn't think that the United States Military might need to know that you're keeping a hostile alien robot frozen in the basement?

9. Shinobi got this one. (King Arthur)
I came to see your face so that I alone may find you on the battlefield. And it will be good of you to mark my face, Saxon, for the next time you see it, it will be the last thing you see on this earth.

10. Dianne got this one (A Mighty Wind)
I had a garage band in Stockholm, which was a challenge in its own right, to keep an instrument tuned with that temperature swing. There's a block warmer for the Volvo in the garage but it's cold in there in the winter. So we played and I had a hit that you might have heard of. "Hur ?r l?get, lilla gumman?" which means, "How's It Hanging, Grandma?" and it was big on the Swedish charts.

11. Shinobi got this one. (Drop Dead Gorgeous)
Oh, Yeah, Frida, sure. She was the oldest living Lutheran. Now she's dead as a doornail. It's them damn Shriner's, won't take down the God damn sign the lazy sons of bitches. Every year, every damn year I tell them, "Take down the God damn Frida sign, you lazy sons of bitches!"

12. Now, you listen to me, Mr. Grand High Poobah of Upper Buttcrack, I'm just about half-past give a shit with your fun and games.

13. Shinobi got this one. (Batman Begins)
You have learned to bury your guilt with anger. I will teach you to confront it, and to face the truth. You know how to fight six men. We can teach you how to engage six hundred. You know how to disappear. We can teach you to become truly invisible.

14. Dianne got this one (Chicago)
I don't mean to toot my own horn, but if Jesus Christ lived in Chicago today, and he had come to me and he had five thousand dollars, let's just say things would have turned out differently.

15. Shinobi got this one. (V for Vendetta)
I remember how the meaning of words began to change. How unfamiliar words like "collateral" and "rendition" became frightening, while things like Norsefire and the Articles of Allegiance became powerful. I remember how "different" became dangerous. I still don't understand it, why they hate us so much.

Why I like Keira Knightley

I meant to link to this post at 5 Resolutions earlier, but forgot. Basically, it's about Keira Knightley refusing to allow any retouching of her breasts in publicity photos for her upcoming movie The Duchess. She won some money from a tabloid that basically blamed her for a young girl who died of anorexia, and she donated that money to an eating disorders charity.

I've always thought she was a great actress, taking on adult roles while other women her age were still doing teeny-bopper movies. I've hated how everyone gets on her case because she's thin. After reading these things about her, I can guarantee that her movies will continue to get my money, and I will pay the ridiculous amount my theater charges to see them.

2007 almost outta here

Well, I finished Halloween Fairy two days ago. YAY! I didn't get that Dandelion Stem floss in time to finish it by the end of November for the Mirabilia contest, but at least I finished it before the end of the year. I've been working on Mirabilia's Angel of the New Dawn and she now has two wings, thank goodness! That's one thing I don't like about stitching angels -- they look sad when they only have one wing and the other wing hasn't been stitched yet. I'll get some pictures up later today or tomorrow.

I've been off since last Saturday and go back to work Wednesday, but didn't do much stitching until the last few days as I was at my parents until this past Wednesday. So, today I watched the Pirates trilogy, now that I have the third movie. Tomorrow, I think I'll watch all the Harry Potters, now that I have the fifth one. I may or may not do that -- that's a lot of Harry Potter in one day, lol. Maybe I'll start them tonight. Anyway, I think the next day (or next weekend), I'll watch the Bourne trilogy, as I also received the third Bourne movie. I've put that off because I really need to watch it, having missed it in the theater. I wonder if they're going to make another Bourne movie. From what I gather, it started out as a trilogy but I've also seen "The Bourne Legacy" and "The Bourne Betrayal" out there. I haven't read any of the books, but may at some point. I'm already extremely behind on my book list.

If I'm not back here before the first, here's hoping everyone has a SAFE and happy New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Bummed about "Beowulf" the movie

I just read "Beowulf" for the first time this past summer and really liked the story. I heard a movie was coming out and thought it would be great. Then, I started seeing previews and realize it's that weird animation that looks almost real but isn't, kinda the way most video games these days look. I hate this kind of animation, it's creepy to me. I don't deny it takes a lot of skill, but it's not for me. So, I won't be seeing this movie.

I also heard that Grendel's mother has a much bigger role in the movie than in the book, that somehow she and Beowulf have some sort of history. Well, I guess if you get Angelina Jolie for a part, even animated, you have to make it into a big part.

Saw HP: OOTP this morning

I thought it was great! No, they weren't able to fit everything into the movie, but I wasn't expecting that. It would have been cool, but impossible for a general movie that is meant for the general public and not all of us weirdos who love the extended versions of LOTR -- and also watch the hours of documentary behind it. :)

It's like the Rush concert I went to last Friday: The have over 30 years' worth of music and only 2.5-3 hours to play. They can't play everything and there were a few songs they'd played that I personally would have replaced with different songs. However, I had a great time, love seeing them in concert and would go again. It's the same with HP -- there are some things I missed but the movie was still great. I think the end scene in the Ministry was particularly well done, and I loved Luna.

Now, to get my hands on the 7th book and read it as soon as I get it.

Just got back from Pirates!

I was pleasantly surprised! I really was let down by the second one. It was OK, but very much a middle movie and I still think the Davey Jones and his crew were overdone in the makeup/special effects department.

However, I really enjoyed POTC3. It was much more emotional than the other two, had a bit more dimension. I don't want to say too much because I know most people haven't seen it yet. As you may have guessed, you need to pay attention because there's a lot going on -- but that's typical of the POTC movies. Keith Richards' character isn't in much of it, but you won't be able to miss him and I like the way they played his character.

OK, that's all I'm going to say. Much more and I'll say something I shouldn't. :)

Woohoo!

After I go home in an hour I won't be back in the office until Tuesday! I'm not completely free tomorrow, as I'm going to training in the morning and working from home in the afternoon, but it's still different from being in the office. I'm so thankful that I actually like my job, because I still have the need for down time and I can't imagine truly hating my job and being stuck there all the time. I've had jobs that didn't thrill me (Burger King comes to mind), but at least I worked with fun people that helped take the crapiness away... a little. :)

So, Friday I'm going to see Pirates, probably at 12:30 so that it (hopefully) won't be as crowded as later. I really have no idea what to expect, but hope I'm not crammed in like a sardine. Tim isn't into it, so I figured that would be the perfect day to take off and go see it. I have Memorial Day off, so that makes a very nice long weekend for me.

I'm going to finish Easter Fairy tonight. I received the Kreinik a few days ago and started filling in her wings and can finish it tonight. I think I can do the beading tonight as there's not a lot and it's all one color. After all that beading I just finished on Mermaid of the Pearls, this will fly by, lol. I meant to stitch on her last night but read instead. I read Harry Potter 5 the other day to refresh my memory for the movie. Of course, after that I just HAD to re-read Harry Potter 6. It's a good thing, as I read them all in sequence in a few weeks about a year ago, so I'm catching/remembering some things that I didn't before. I think the fifth movie is going to be great and am impatiently waiting for the seventh book.

So, not sure what I'm going to stitch on over this lovely long weekend. This week I also worked a little on Why Hoard Gold, so I may do some more of that. I doubt I'll spend all weekend on it, though. As adorable as the Dragon Dreams designs are, the rayon floss drives me nuts and I only stitch on them a little at a time. Of course, I don't HAVE to use the rayon and can substitute DMC, but I must admit that I love seeing that shiney look on those dragons. Her dragons are so adorable that I'm willing to tough it out with the rayon to make it look right. One of my stitching friends works with rayon floss on patterns that don't call for it and she uses it a lot. I tell her she's nuts, but she definitely has a knack for it and her pieces look beautiful.

OK, enought blathering for now. :)

Rant and Rave

1. Minor rant -- I hate it when people use the snow as an excuse to leave early. I'm not talking nasty, icy snow like we got in February. I'm talking 2 inches (at the most) of gently falling, dry powdery snow that doesn't even stick to the roads because they've been treated. I was in a training class for two days and a bunch of people said they had to leave early because of the snow, and left about 3 hours early. Come on! I know some people are scared to drive in snow, but THIS IS PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA! We get snow every year, for cryin' out loud!

2. Rave -- I saw Zodiac yesterday after leaving my training on time. :) I got there just in time to get some yummies and sit down to watch it at 5PM and get home a little after 8PM and still have a little evening left. I really enjoyed it. I saw a review that said they thought it was too plodding and stuck too much to the case files, but I really liked it. It showed how they went through the process of figuring things out, finding out they were wrong, finding out maybe they were right, etc. It also showed how, years after the last killings, the Zodiac was still affecting lives in a big way. I also like a lot of the actors -- Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo.

Ghostrider

Tim and I went to see Ghostrider over the weekend. Funny, it was better than I thought it would be, not as good as he thought it would be. He hadn't read the comic, so at least he didn't go in wanting it to match the comic book. Somebody told him it was the best movie he'd ever seen, lol, so he thought it would be a little better than it was.

To quote Luke Thompson from E Online, "Seriously, people, if you’re going to go see a movie you know is about a biker with a flaming skull and magic chains, you forfeit the right to complain about how the plot isn’t logical or realistic." I agree completely. It's not meant to be the next Lord of the Rings or Casablanca, it's just a fun movie. I think I'm one of a few Nicholas Cage fans out there these days. Some of his movies have annoyed me, but for the most part I really like his quirkiness and thought it was great for this character. I also liked Peter Fonda as Mephistopheles and Sam Elliott, of course. :)

Glorifying the mob?

Maybe someone can explain this to me. I've seen several people say they didn't like that The Departed won the Oscar for Best Movie because they don't like movies that glorify the mob. Frankly, I loved The Departed and plan on buying it very soon. I understand people not liking it because of the violence and language in general, but don't understand how it glorifies crime.

How does Goodfellas or The Departed glorify the mob? Sure, they show the guys with a lot of money and power. They also show the vast majority of them dying in violent ways, some of them snitching on others and having to live in the 'burbs in the Witness Protection Program, etc. To me, they always showed how violent the mob is and how most people involved die an early death.

It's like people who got so upset over the song "Snowblind" by STYX. "Oh, it's talking about cocaine! We can't have it!" Well, if you listen to the lyrics, it's talking about addiction and how awful it is, not that it's great.

I don't get it.

Tim and I actually went out last night

Between his crazy schedule and the weeks he was mostly living as his mom's while she was recovering from knee replacement surgery, Tim and I haven't done much together in months. Last night we went out to dinner and a movie and had a great time. We went to Red Lobster, which can be a good or bad experience, but last night was very good. I got a yummy salmon and shrimp dinner. I always forget that they slather everything with butter, but I usually don't so once in a while won't kill me. :)

We saw "The Departed" at the 10:30 showing so that we weren't dealing with the barely-17 crowd that can get annoying in such movies. Sorry to those teens who don't act like idiots, but you know what I'm talking about. It was a great movie, but not for anyone who is sensitive to obnoxious language and violence. After all, it is a Martin Scorsese film and is Rated R, so I really shouldn't have to say that. There weren't any little kids at the movie, either, dragged there by parents to freak out over the blood, so that was good. I feel really bad for kids that get dragged to these types of movies because of selfish parents, but if I'm paying $9.50 for a movie I'm also ticked if I can't enjoy the movie because of it.

So, it was a great evening. We had debated between watching this or "The Prestige." I still want to see "The Prestige" but I think we made a good choice last night.

Good grief!

A few minor rants today:

1. One does not need to see the new movie World Trade Center to be a "proud American." This gets so old. Also, just because a person doesn't want to see the movie or doesn't agree with the war in Iraq does NOT mean that the person has forgotten what happened 9/11. No, it just means that maybe that person thinks there was a better way of handling the aftermath and that 9/11 had nothing to do with the war in Iraq.

I think I posted about this a while back, but I don't intend to see this movie in the theater and may some day watch it at home. Just seeing the previews upsets me. I do watch that last DVD of my New York documentary from time to time, and for me that works better than a Hollywood movie. I also know that the actual policemen and their wives were part of the process of making this movie, so I think, although it's Hollywood, it will be fairly accurate to what happened to them. Still, if I see it I will be at home where I will feel free to be emotional.

2. AC/DC and similar music is not going to make people crazy and do things they wouldn't do otherwise. I can understand not wanting a young child wearing a shirt like that, especially when he just likes the look of it and doesn't know who AC/DC is. However, I disagree that it's devil music -- that whole thing gets soooooo old. I listened to, and still listen to, that kind of music and I have yet to grow horns, kill a person, or anything else some people seem to associate with metal. I will admit to, when I was younger, wearing my Metallica t-shirts and heavy black eye makeup to go cross stitch shopping, just to see the reactions lol. I don't like being pigeon-holed and it was my way of getting a bit of a rise out of people, maybe making them think for a split second about their assumptions. I was always very polite and nice and always bought a decent amount of stuff. When I did the same thing at other stores I noticed that I was followed around quite a bit, probably because they thought I'd steal something. At the LNS it was the opposite, because they probably simply thought I was in the wrong store. :)

3. Thewe new H3 commercials are pretty stupid and offensive. The idea that one has to buy one of these gas-guzzling pieces of crap to be a real man or a woman who stands up for herself is stupid. That's the whole problem with some SUV drivers -- notice I said SOME, not ALL. Some of these people get behind the wheel of these monster vehicles and they get a power trip and drive like maniacs and think they own the road and that everybody needs to get out of the way. So now we have a lovely commercial driving that attitude home. Great job.

That is all. I'm sure I'll have more ranting later, the way things already are going on some of my boards.

New York City history

I finally finished this one yesterday. I've been chipping away at it on the way to and from work and finally finished it. It's a very good book, but I'll have to read it again some day to pick up what I missed, as there's sooooo much information. The problem with reading books on the train is that sometimes there are very sad parts and I try not to cry in front of people, who would think I've lost it. The last part of the book talks about how so many people willingly gave up their lives because they were so sure that this war would leave Europe secure and that by fighting this terrible war such a terrible war would never have to be fought again. Of course, we all know that WWI was the setup for WWII, even though they thought at the time that it was "the war to end all wars." Seeing their feelings written down in this way, though, really got to me.

So, now I'm reading a book that's less dense but very interesting nonetheless. It's Downtown: My Manhattan by Pete Hamill. One of the items on my 101 list is to read one of his books, and this recently came out in paperback and I grabbed it. I'm going to have to read some of his other works, as he's a joy to read. This book talks about lower Manhattatn, where he's lived most of his life except for when he was a young child living in Brooklyn. I became interested in him after seeing his interviews on my New York documentary. He just seemed so downt-to-earth and is a son of Irish immigrants, and the way he talks and tells a story is really interesting. His writing is the same -- I feel like he's sitting next to me, telling me about the people he sees while spending some time at The Battery, and talking about what he sees there naturally leads him into talking about the history of that part of the city.

It's very strange, this fascination I have recently acquired regarding NYC's history. NYC is not someplace I actually care to visit, as I can't handle all the crowds. It's a shame, because I really would like to see some of these places, and maybe I'll force myself to take a train ride and stay a night or two once in a while, since it's pretty close to Philly. I went there once for 5 days when I was in college. I was there for a college press conference, and by the time I left I was soooo ready to leave lol. I just can't take all the people in one place; being in the middle of a big crowd when I can't see out makes me very anxious.

Anyway, I grew up hating the city. When I was a kid, I constantly heard my dad bemoaning the fact that a lot of the taxes he paid went to those who lived in NYC. I also remember him seeing the "city people" taking pictures of the beautiful deer eating our crops across the road. It didn't sit well with him. :)

I guess it was after 9/11 and watching this documentary for the first time on tv that I started getting interested in the city. It's interesting to see how so many things that happened there really did set the pace for the rest of the country. The New Deal started in NYC after the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory fire, which was absolutely horrific. One creepy part of this documentary is that, since it was finished in 2001 before 9/11, there are strange little foreshadowings and ironies in the piece that would have meant nothing before 9/11, but much more after. One of the worst parts about the Triangle fire was that the women were on the 8th and 9th floors and couldn't get out because the exits were closed, presumably so that union reps could not get in. Of course, the women couldn't get out and ended up having to jump out of the building. The reform movement started after this, they say, so that something so horrific would never happen in the city again. I couldn't help but think that it happend almost 100 years later, with people jumping from much higher up to escape a fire. There are quite a few little moments like that, that bring home what happened on 9/11.

I guess that's why I've become interested. On a board I visit we were discussing how that day affected people differently, and for many people in the country it was "business as usual" a few days later. I wasn't sure what she meant by that and asked her, and during our conversation I discovered she meant that in NYC, people still look scared if they hear an overhead plane flying lower than usual, etc. I don't really do that here in Philly, although when I hear a plane flying lower than usual I do think of that day, but I don't get that scared feeling. But, in many ways, my personal life didn't go back to "business as usual." That day changed me, granted not in as profound a way as those who witnessed it firsthand, and I don't want to make it look like I suffered what they did -- there's just no way that's true. However, I have become more weepy since then. I don't cry for no apparent reason, but I tend to tear up more often when something sad happens in a movie, or in a book. Heck, I nearly bawled at the end of Harry Potter 6. The Triangle fire incident really upsets me when I watch a documentary about it, or read about it. So, for me it has never been "business as usual" since that day. While I don't want to EVER negate the feelings of New Yorkers on that day, or those in or near Washington, D.C for that matter, I don't want them to think that it didn't matter to me and that it was no big deal. I've cried my tears for their loss on that day, believe me.

I have very mixed feelings about this new movie coming out, World Trade Center. I won't be seeing it, I can tell you that right now. Maybe I'll be able to watch it in 10 years, I don't know. When I want to memorialize that day, I have the additional DVD that was made after the attacks and added to that NY documentary. It's 3 hours of narrative and interviews about the rise and fall of the towers and is magnificent. I'd much rather watch that, the truth about what happened, than a Hollywood version of that day. That being said, for some people this may be good for them. Perhaps it will help some of the families and friends of victims have some closure? I really don't know, as I'm not in their shoes, but if this movie helps any of them then who am I to say it should be banned? I'm not one to think any movie, book, newspaper, etc. should ever be banned, anyway. If you don't want to see it, don't see it. If you want to protest that it was made, I'm not going to stop you, but neither am I going to join you.
